A Permanent Residence Card (PR card) is proof of your permanent resident status in Canada. If you are a permanent resident and do not have a PR card, you may apply for a first PR card. You may also apply for the renewal of a PR Card that has or will soon expire; or the replacement of a PR Card that has been lost, stolen or damaged.
You can only apply for a PR Card if you are a permanent resident of Canada and physically present in the country. A permanent resident who is outside Canada and does not have a valid PR Card must apply for a travel document from a Canadian visa office.
